Getting Started with Atlas

on 10 months ago

ChatGPT Atlas is OpenAI's macOS browser, for speed, security, and compatibility with the modern web. This guide covers installation, making Atlas your default browser, importing your bookmarks and settings, basic personalization, updates, and common fixes.

System requirements

ChatGPT Atlas supports Macs with Apple silicon (M-series chips) running macOS 12 Monterey or later.

Download and install

  1. Download the Atlas installer (.dmg).
  2. Open the .dmg, then drag Atlas into Applications.
  3. Eject the installer from Finder.
  4. Open Atlas from Applications or via Spotlight.
  5. If macOS prompts for permission, approve to complete setup.

During onboarding, Atlas will be automatically added to the dock.

If you want to put Atlas in your doc: open Applications, drag Atlas to the Dock, and drop it where you want. Once it's placed in the dock, cmd + click on the app icon, select Options, and click on Keep in Dock.

Make Atlas your default browser

You can set Atlas as default inside the browser:

  1. Open Atlas.
  2. Go to Settings.
  3. In General, click on Set default.
  4. In the pop-up, select "Use Atlas" to set Atlas as your default browser.

You can confirm the default in macOS System Settings under Desktop & Dock → Default web browser.

Users that make Atlas their default browser gain increased rate limits for the first 7 days. (Terms apply).

Bring your bookmarks, passwords, and history

You can bring your saved passwords, passwords, and browsing history over from Chrome to pick up where you left off. This won't affect your experience on Chrome.

To get started:

  1. Select ChatGPT Atlas at the top of your desktop window and select Import data from another browser.
  2. In the pop-up window, select Start import.
  3. Allow Keychain Access. This lets you import saved passwords from Chrome. You can remove access at any time.
  4. Once you have completed authentication, select Done.

Keep Atlas up to date

Atlas checks for updates automatically. You can also check manually:

  1. Open ChatGPT Atlas and select Check for updates.
  2. If an update is available, follow the prompt to relaunch.

Site permissions, camera, and microphone

Atlas asks before any site can use sensitive features like the camera, microphone, or location. Permissions are set per site, so you stay in control. During onboarding, Atlas requests two app permissions (banners and alerts) so it can show notifications. All other permissions are requested only when a site needs them. You can review or change permissions at any time by going to your Settings, selecting Web Browsing, and clicking on Site settings.

  • Sites should request access only when a feature needs it, for example a video call or voice note.
  • Access is limited to the tab where you granted it and only while capture is active. You'll see an indicator in the address bar when the camera or microphone is in use.
  • You can change or revoke a site's permission at any time.

Review or change permissions:

  • Change defaults: Go to Settings, then Web Browsing and security, then Site settings. Choose Camera or Microphone, pick your default device, and set the default behavior (Ask, Allow, or Block).
  • Change a single site: Select the lock icon in the address bar, then choose Site settings to allow or block Camera or Microphone for that site. (Google Help)
  • macOS system access: If the camera or microphone is blocked by macOS, open System Settings, then Privacy & Security, then Camera (or Microphone). Enable access for Atlas, then retry in Atlas.
